An acclaimed professional flutist, Gia Sastre has been
praised by teachers, colleagues, and audiences alike for her beautiful sound,
developed technique, and natural sense of musicality. Ms. Sastre hails from
Miami, Florida and holds a Master of Music in Flute Performance from DePaul
University in Chicago and a Bachelor of Music from Florida State University.
Over the years, she has been privileged to study with several renowned flutists
including Eva Amsler, Charles Delaney, Christina Smith, and Mary Stolper. Early in her career, Ms. Sastre also traveled
to the UK to pursue a resident course of study with Paul Edmund-Davies, then
principal of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Sastre spent the last several years in Chicago
performing as a recitalist and freelance artist with a variety of chamber
groups, new music ensembles, and orchestras.
As a soloist, Ms. Sastre was winner of the Musicians Club of Women
Farwell Award and invited to perform recitals at Preston Bradley Hall in the
Chicago Cultural Center as well as other concert venues throughout the city of
Chicago. Most frequently, she could be heard in concert as part of Abellimento Flute & Harp Duo, her
collaboration with distinguished harpist AnnLaura Tapia. The duo's debut
recording, entitled Abellimento, was
released in January 2006 to much critical acclaim.
In addition, Ms. Sastre has enjoyed teaching through her
home flute studio for many years, working with dedicated and talented students
of all ages. While in Chicago, Ms. Sastre served on the faculty of the DePaul
University Community Music Program as both flute instructor and flute choir
director. When she is not playing or teaching music, Gia is enjoying time with
her husband and their son. A recent move brought her family back to their home state
of Florida, and they now reside in Jacksonville.
